I was using xmms as the music player in my ubuntu 8.04 box. Recently I heard about a plugin in audacious using which we make the now running song as the pidgin user status/comment. So I switched to it. But when I tried to play any audio files with it, it doesn’t play.

After running audacious in terminal, I got these messages.

$ audacious
amidi-plug(amidi-plug.c:amidiplug_init:97): init, read configuration
amidi-plug(i_backend.c:i_backend_load:107): loading backend '/usr/lib/audacious/Input/amidi-plug/ap-alsa.so'
amidi-plug(i_backend.c:i_backend_load:145): backend /usr/lib/audacious/Input/amidi-plug/ap-alsa.so (name 'alsa') successfully loaded

** (audacious:19958): WARNING **: Failed to connect to server: Connection refused

** (audacious:19958): WARNING **: Failed to connect to server: Connection refused

** (audacious:19958): WARNING **: Failed to connect to server: Connection refused
MADPlug-Message: failed to open audio output: XMMS reverse compatibility output plugin

** (audacious:19958): WARNING **: Failed to connect to server: Connection refused
MADPlug-Message: failed to open audio output: XMMS reverse compatibility output plugin

After seeing the XMMS, in the output, I thought it is due to the presence of the old XMMS in the system. So i uninstalled it. Still the problem persists…..

I googled the complaint and at last I understood the problem is due to the missing of pulseaudio. Audacious generally uses pulseaudio as the default audio device.

It is very simple to cover this problem.

Open audacious.

Press Ctrl+p to open the preference window.

Move to the audio tab.

Change the Current Output plugin from PulseAudio Output Plugin to ALSA Output Plugin.

Close the preference window.

Now onwards audacious will play without any errors.

In the last post we have discussed how to enable clean url’s in drupal. Now let us discuss the same for wordpress.

This tutorial will show you how to setup WordPress to use clean URL’s. Using clean URL’s is one of the first step in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Besides that, they just look better.

The default WordPress URL structure is: http://www.yoursite.com/?p=123. What does p=123 even mean? Well, I would guess that it is the post id, but what does your reader see? A URL like this will be much better: http://www.yoursite.com/category/title-of-the-post be much better. It will have some meaning to your readers, and more importantly, search engines. The title is one of the most important things a search engine will look at. The better your site places on the SERPs (search engine results page), the more traffic you will drive to your site. Of course this is only one step in SEO, but is a good start.

There is one thing to keep in mind before you change your permalink structure. You will lose inbound links from other sites and search engines. If you have a large amount of traffic from direct addresses or bookmarks, you will not have to worry about this. If you are just starting out, I would recommend going with clean URL’s from the start. It is really simple to make a custom permalink structure for WordPress.

First, if your .htaccess file is writeable, WordPress is supposed to update it automatically. If not it will give you the code to cut and paste into your .htaccess file. I have had problems letting WordPress edit the .htaccess file in the past (it never seems to update it), so I will edit it manually.

Log on to your WordPress account as the administrator and click on Options and then Permalinks.

As you can see, the default settings are are already selected. We want to enable custom URL’s so click the option button next to Custom, specify below.

Now we need to define the URL’s. There are many variable that you can use, but I will choose to use the category and postname variables. If you would like to use something else (day, month, year, posted, subcategory, etc.) you may want to see the custom permalinks page on the Official WordPress site. In the Custom Structure box, enter the following:
/%category%/%postname%

Click the save option given below.

Now let us check if this is working or not. Point your browser to any of your wordpress post. If the page is displayed with an error, we have to work some more to fulfill our desire to make clean url’s

Open the FTP address of our blog using an FTP client such as filezilla or gftp. Open the file .htaccess. Change its content to the following script.

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ /index.php/$1 [L,QSA]
</IfModule>

The acronym LAMP refers to a solution stack of software, usually free and open source software, used to run dynamic Web sites or servers. The original expansion is as follows:

Linux, referring to the operating system;

Apache, the Web server;

MySQL, the database management system (or database server);

one of several scripting languages: Perl, PHP or Python. Here we use PHP.

The combination of these technologies is used primarily to define a web server infrastructure, define a programming paradigm of developing software, and establish a software distribution package.

Here I am now discussing how easily a person can install LAMP in a ubuntu box ( I am using ubuntu hardy heron 8.04).

Fire up the terminal and start entering…

First of all we have to install the apache server in our box.
sudo apt-get install apache2
Follow the prompts to install Apache. Once the installation is finished, you can test that Apache is working by opening up Firefox and navigating to http://127.0.0.1. If it works, you should see something like this:

It works!

Next, you’ll need to install MySQL. Return to the Terminal and type this command:
sudo apt-get install mysql-server-5.0
During the installation you be will asked to provide a root password for MySQL. Be sure to pick a strong password (a combination of lowercase, punctuation, and uppercase letters), since the root user has full access to all tables on all databases. For obvious reasons, you’ll want to remember this password, not least because we need it again in the following steps.

Next, install PHP version 5:
sudo apt-get install php5

Install the MySQL module for PHP:
sudo apt-get install php5-mysql

Now that we’ve got our software installed and downloaded, we’ll need to
configure it.
First, you’ll probably need to add a line to your /etc/apache2/apache2.conf
file. I have read differing things about this; some people claim it isn’t

necessary. I have found in my own testing that WordPress or Drupal would not function properly without it, since Apache did not properly interpret the PHP pages otherwise. To edit apache2.conf, use the following command:
sudo gedit /etc/apache2/apache2.conf
(Note that it’s a good idea to back up any system configuration file before editing it. You can do so quickly by using
sudo cp /etc/apache2/apache2.conf ~/Desktop to save a copy to your Desktop. You can of course
use vi or emacs or the editor of your choice, but most new users seem to
prefer gedit’s GUI.)
Once you are in gedit, add the following line to the end of the file:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .html
Save the file and exit gedit.

In my pc, whenever I try to start a machine via virtualbox, I get an error “VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (rc=-1908)”. I googled a lot for the solution. But majority of people say to reinstall the software. But this is not a good solution to reinstall after any crash (just like what the windows people do). So I tried to analyse the problem, hack it and finally I solved the issue.

After a long inspection, I understood, there is some mismatch between my kernel and virtualbox. I figure out, the vboxnetflt did not compile during installation. I compiled it manually from the source directory.

Let’s start the work…. Fireup the terminal start typing the following codes.

cd /usr/src/vboxnetflt-2.1.4/ (please not the version may be different)

sudo make && sudo make install (If you get an error showing “unable to find the sources of your current Linux kernel. Specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run “, you have to do a lot of things more, else skip to the step 7).

To know the kernel version you are using now, type: uname -r ( In my case I got the result 2.6.27-11-generic).

Now google and download two packages with the name given in the last step. ( In my case, I downloaded linux-headers-2.6.27-11 and linux-headers-2.6.27-11-generic. Search with the pre-name linux-headers-).

Install the downloaded .deb files.

Now again type sudo make && sudo make install.

Now modprobe vboxnetflt by typing sudo modprobe vboxnetflt.

Also modprobe vboxdrv by typing modprobe vboxdrv.

So the work is over and I am sure you can use the virtualbox machines easily…..

In order to solve this please do the following works.

Open terminal and type: sudo apt-get install cups-pdf

When you print, just select the PDF printer and by default the files are saved in a folder called PDF, so we will create this folder: mkdir ~/PDF/

A favicon is a website icon associated with a particular website or a webpage. Having a favicon on your blog allows visitors to quickly identify your site in their bookmarks. If you are a WordPress blog owner and want to add a favicon to your blog, here is the simplest way to do so.

Creating Favicon.ico file

Goto Favicon generator

Upload the image from your computer using the “Browse” button in the Favicon generator.

If you wish to get an animated text gif icon, you can provide the text in “scrolling text”(Optional)

Click “Create Favicon”

You would get a preview of favicon.ico. On the right side, you would find the option to download favicon. Click on “Get It Now!”.Save the zip file to your computer. The zip file would contain four files:

favicon.ico

preview_16×16.png

preview_32×32.png

animated_favicon.gif

The favicon.ico is what you need. Extract it to your computer and upload the file to your root folder. For example, if your website is http://www.gnuise.co.cc then the favicon.ico should be placed as http://www.gnuise.co.cc/favicon.ico Usually, this would be the “httpdocs” or “public_html” or the “www” folder.

Adding the favicon.ico file to your WordPress Blog:

Now that you have uploaded it, you would have to edit your header.php in your wordpress blog.

Log into your WordPress admin section, choose “Presentation” and select “Theme Editor”

Choose “header.php” from the right side links and add the below line inside the head section.

<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”favicon.ico”>
<link rel=”icon” href=”favicon.ico”>

Save the header.php file

Now, refresh your website by pressing Ctrl+F5 keys. You should be able to see the favicon next to your website URL.If you are still unable to see the favicon, close your website and delete temporary internet files. Try opening the website again.
